The Encyclopedia of Newfoundland and Labrador, Jackson's Cove-Langdon's Cove-Silverdale at ht tp://enl.cuff.com/entry/50/5062.htm, "A James Batstone of Jackson's Cove filed a suit claimin g he had first discovered the ore body early in the 1870s and was awarded a one-seventh shar e in the mine for $220". United Church Records, Little Bay Islands, Green Bay From the Twillingate Sun, August 14, 1886: SUDDEN DEATH OF JAMES HENRY BATSTONE OF JACKSON'S COVE The deceased, the week before he died, had been visiting his friends in Nippers Harbour and h ad returned in perfect health. On Sunday he spent the day, as has been his custom for over 20 years, in not only attending b ut in helping to conduct the Methodist service in that village. He seemed, however, on this Sunday, July 26th, particularly to enjoy the sacred service. He h ad scarcely returned 2 hours when his wife, hearing him breathe heavily, lighted the lamp an d in a few seconds, without a word, or sigh, he passed away. Crowds of people on Wednesday flocked from neighbouring harbours to attend the funeral. It wa s the largest known in this part of the Bay; and was a strong proof of the great and good inf luence this devoted Christian man has asserted for over 40 years along "these wild rocky shor es". He was 55 years of age and leaves a widow and family in deep sorrow. photo of the joint tombstone for James and wife Jane, erected by their children -- PHOTO -- h ttp://ngb.chebucto.org/Cemetery/bastone-james-jane-492.shtml |
