http://genuki.cs.ncl.ac.uk/DEV/Cullompton/CullomptonBaptisms1754.html 7th July 1771, Thomas son of Lion'l Chancey prsh clk Thomas Chancey had arrived in Newfoundland with his 1/2 brother Lionel, from Cullompton in De von, apparently "before 1780." Just how old they were is uncertain, but the circumstantial evidence suggests that Lionel wa s then an adult and that Thomas was much younger, perhaps in his early teens. Lionel remained in Newfoundland all his life and held a number of administrative posts. Thoma s found employment as a bookkeeper with one of the wealthiest of the Poole firms, G. & J. Kem p, and then went into business on his own. Chancey had become ill 3 days before leaving Dominica but insisted on transferring to anothe r ship to go on to St. Kitts. He was taken ashore there and died 2 days later. In his will (in which he described himself a s being "of Cullompton in the County of Devon ... but at present residing and carrying on bus iness at Carbonear" he asked for all his business debts to be paid before leaving his share o f property in Harbour Grace to his son. The will was dated 14 December 1807, five days before Gosse wrote to Ledgard to tell him of C hancey's departure. http://ngb.chebucto.org/Wills/cbc-chancey-thomas-1-66.shtml THE WILL OF THOMAS CHANCEY OF CARBONEAR - 1807 Volume 1, page 66 I, THOMAS CHANCEY of Cullumpton in the County of Devon in the Kingdom of Great Britain but a t present residing and carrying on business at Carbonear in the Island of Newfoundland, bein g in good health of body and of a sound mind & memory considering the shortness of this lif e and the necessity of having my worldly affairs arranged in such manner as may prevent dispu te or misunderstanding after my Death, do hereby make this my last Will and testament whic h I request may be received as such in manner and form following.
